What Azar is

Azar is a one-on-one video chat app launched in 2014 by Seoul-based Hyperconnect. It matches you with strangers, offers real-time voice-to-subtitle translation, and puts gender and region filters behind a subscription. Match Group acquired Hyperconnect in 2021.

Why people look for a Azar alternative

01

Filters you have to pay for

Choosing who you meet by gender or region is part of Azar's subscription, so the free experience is mostly random video.

02

Video stays the default

Azar adds safety blurring and an Azar Badge for users with clean histories, but every chat still opens on a face. Some people want the conversation without that.

03

Concerns about younger users

The App Store rates Azar 18+, yet French press coverage in 2026 described it as popular with teenagers, which made some adults rethink where they chat.

The best Azar alternatives

  1. 1

    HushNo camera, no photos

Hush suits Azar users who enjoyed the one-on-one format but not the pressure of being on camera. You still get one real person at a time. Instead of a filter you pay for, you choose a vibe for free, and instead of a video tile you trade voice notes, where tone and humor do the work a face used to do.

  2. 2

    HelloTalk

Built for language exchange, with corrections, voice messages and calls.

  3. 3

    Tandem

Language partners with a profile review before you can chat.

  4. 4

    Chatroulette

If you want random video without an app, it still runs on the web.

When Azar is still the better pick

Stay with Azar if you talk across languages. Its live translation is a genuine strength that Hush does not offer, and if seeing your match matters to you, Azar's video is the core of the product.

Questions people ask
