A photo is processed in under a second and it sets everything downstream. Who gets a reply, how much effort the first message gets, and whether anything written afterwards is read generously or skimmed. The words never got a fair hearing because they arrived second.
It also creates a permanent performance. Choosing, cropping, and updating a picture is work, and the app rewards the people willing to keep doing it rather than the people worth talking to.

A color, a name you pick, and your voice. That is the whole surface. There is no last seen, no follower count, and no mutual friends list to size someone up with.
A vibe instead of a swipe deck

Voice, which carries more than a picture
Tone, pace, hesitation, and humour all survive in a voice note and none of them survive in a photo. It turns out people are much more recognisable by how they sound than by how they photograph.

- Media inside a conversation requires mutual consent, so unsolicited images are structurally impossible.

What people worry about first
The most common objection is that attraction needs a face. It is a fair point and it is only half true. What a photo gives you is an instant yes or no. What it cannot give you is whether a person is funny, present, curious, or kind, and those are the things that decide whether a conversation is worth having tomorrow.
The second worry is honesty. If nobody can see you, what stops someone pretending. In practice voice is much harder to fake than a picture, and it is far harder to sustain across a real conversation. A filtered photo takes one tap. A filtered personality takes work nobody bothers with.

Is a no photo app safer?

No selfie verification and no body shots. Age verification happens at signup and the intimate vibe is gated to verified adults, without requiring your face.
Why would an app remove photos on purpose?
