What Chatroulette is

Chatroulette launched in November 2009, built by Andrey Ternovskiy when he was 17. It pairs users for live webcam chats with strangers. It now asks for a free account, and in 2020 it brought in the AI company Hive to flag inappropriate video automatically.

Why people look for a Chatroulette alternative

01

Its reputation arrived first

Chatroulette became known for explicit content within months of launch. Even with today's filters, many people never shake that first association.

02

Moderation is chasing a live feed

Image recognition and human reviewers check flagged streams, but the founder has described these tools as stopgaps because users keep finding gaps. Live video is hard to police in real time.

03

Being on camera is tiring

Lighting, your room, your face at 1 a.m. For people who just want to talk, a webcam adds a performance they did not sign up for.

The best Chatroulette alternatives

  1. 1

    HushNo camera, no photos

If you came to Chatroulette for the strange, lovely feeling of talking to someone in another life, Hush keeps that and drops the lens. You pick the mood you are in, meet one person whose vibe meets yours, and talk in voice notes or writing. It is slower than a roulette wheel, which is what lets a conversation actually form.

  2. 2

    Emerald Chat

Random one-on-one text or video with interest matching and an account requirement.

  3. 3

    Azar

One-on-one video with live translated subtitles, owned by Match Group.

  4. 4

    Discord

Not random at all, but large public servers let you meet strangers around a shared interest.

When Chatroulette is still the better pick

Stay on Chatroulette if seeing the person matters to you, or if you enjoy the speed of moving through many faces in one evening. It has been around since 2009, it now uses AI moderation, and for people who want live video with strangers it is still the reference.
