What Kik is

Kik is a free, username-based messaging app owned by MediaLab AI, Inc. MediaLab updated Kik's terms in February 2025 to restrict minors. In September 2026 Connecticut's Attorney General opened an investigation into its age assurance and content moderation.

Why people look for a Kik alternative

01

Reputation around safety

Child safety groups have criticized Kik for years, and the Connecticut Attorney General's 2026 statement echoed those concerns.

02

Reactive moderation

The Attorney General's office alleges moderation on Kik is reactive and that the company has not audited its age checks.

03

A username is a door

Once your Kik username is shared, anyone who has it can reach you. Some users would rather not be findable at all.

The best Kik alternatives

  1. 1

    HushNo camera, no photos

Hush suits former Kik users who liked messaging without a phone number attached but want stronger guardrails. There is no username to hand out, voice notes are checked before they arrive, and nothing visual gets sent unless both people agree.

  2. 2

    Discord

Username-based too, but with teen-default safety settings rolling out globally in 2026.

  3. 3

    Slowly

Anonymous pen pals with nickname and avatar, at letter pace.

When Kik is still the better pick

Stay on Kik if you use it to keep in touch with people you already know through usernames and it works for you. Hush is not a general messenger for existing contacts.

Questions people ask

Yes. In September 2026 Connecticut's Attorney General announced an investigation into MediaLab, Kik's owner, over age assurance and content moderation. It is an investigation, not a ruling.

Kik is owned by MediaLab AI, Inc., which acquired it in 2019.

There is no username for strangers to search and no public profile. You only talk with the person you are paired with.
