Right after hello
- How do you know the host, or what brought you here?
- Have you been to one of these before?
- What is the best thing you have heard about tonight so far?
- What did you do today before this?
- Is this your usual kind of scene, or are you branching out?
- Are you from around here, or did you end up here somehow?
- What made you decide to come tonight?
Finding common ground
- What do you usually do when you have a free evening?
- What is a place in this city you would send a visitor to?
- What are you reading, watching or listening to lately?
- What is a hobby you have stuck with for years?
- Where was the last trip you took?
- What is a food you could talk about for too long?
- What is a local spot you think is overrated?
- What is something you are into that you rarely meet other people who share?
Hearing their story
Once you have found a thread, these help them tell it.
- How did you end up doing what you do?
- What is the most surprising place your life has taken you so far?
- What is something you are excited about right now?
- What is the best part of your week usually?
- What do you wish people asked you about instead of your job?
- What is a recent change in your life you are happy about?
- What would you be doing if you were not here right now?
- What did you used to want to be, and how close did you get?
Before you part ways
- What are you up to for the rest of the night?
- Is there an event or place you would recommend I check out?
- What is the best way to keep in touch with you?
- What should I look up after this conversation?
- Do you come to things like this often, so I know where to find you again?
- What was the highlight of your night?
- Can I ask one last question before you go?
How to use them
Use the setting as your first question. The event, the place or the host is the one thing you definitely have in common, which makes it the most natural place to start.
Find one thread and pull it. The middle sections are not a checklist. Once you discover a shared interest, a city you both know or a hobby you both have, stay there and let the conversation build on its own.
End on purpose. A good closing question, like asking for a recommendation, gives you a graceful exit and a reason to reconnect. The same arc works whether you meet someone at a party or are matched with a new aura on Hush.
Questions people ask
Ask about the shared context: how they know the host, what brought them to the event, whether they have been before. It is easy to answer, it is relevant and it usually leads naturally to other topics.
Keep a couple of open questions in mind, and when a topic winds down, connect your next question to something they already said. Silences are also less awkward than they feel, so do not panic over a short pause.
Signal it warmly: thank them, mention something you enjoyed about the conversation and either exchange contact info or say you hope to run into them again. A clean exit leaves a better impression than a fading one.
